MacBook Air User Feedback – Your One and Only Computer

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

It certainly is a compelling secondary machine for anyone whose primary machine is an iMac or Mac Pro, but for many people, the MacBook Air will serve just fine as their one and only computer.

MacBook Air User Feedback – Loving It

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

I’ve now been using the Air for some time as my only laptop. The Pro still hasn’t left the desktop and I doubt it ever will while I own it. My girlfriend replaced her regular MacBook with an Air as well. The verdict after extended use? L-o-v-i-n-g it. Both of us.

MacBook Air

Walter Mossberg of Wall Street Journal has reviewed the MacBook Air and he concludes:

If you value thinness, and a large screen and keyboard in a subnotebook, and don’t watch DVDs on planes or require spare batteries, the MacBook Air might be just the ticket. But if you rely on spare batteries, expect the usual array of ports, or like to play DVDs on planes, this isn’t the computer to buy.”

MacBook Air

CNET Review Summary:

The good: Incredibly thin yet surprisingly sturdy; new trackpad gesture controls are very useful; remote optical drive makes living without a built-in drive much easier.

The bad: Very limited connectivity; slower than other MacBooks; SSD hard-drive option is ridiculously expensive and standard hard drive is small; battery is not user replaceable.

The bottom line: The design is revolutionary, but Apple’s MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialized audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.

MacBook Air Review By Ars Technica

MacBook Air

The Ars Technica Review summary:

The Good

  • Form factor is indisputably thin and light. Photos don’t do it justice
  • Sturdy despite its looks
  • Works great as a full-size portable Internet device

The Bad

  • Migration Assistant is incredibly annoying to use without FireWire
  • Most of your USB devices won’t fit into the tiny port door—stock up on your extension cables
  • Performance isn’t exactly the Air’s strong point compared to other Macs

The Ugly

  • 4200rpm drive causes major machine slowdowns when there’s lots of disk activity
  • Battery life is disappointing—only half of advertised life on lowest screen brightness
